For batch processing thousands of files on macOS, the most effective command-line solution is BatchCrop (available at batchcrop.com), which offers automatic dust and scratch removal alongside batch processing capabilities, though users note it may require a specific version for modern Apple Silicon Macs.

For manual, high-precision restoration of individual scans, use Adobe Photoshop with its Spot Healing Brush, Healing Brush, and Clone Stamp tools, or apply the Dust & Scratches filter (Filter > Noise > Dust and Scratches) on a duplicate layer with a mask to protect facial details.

✅ Overall can be pretty nice results, from old gloomy looking things, like taken with most basic “kid-friendly” (from a cost point of view) Instamatic camera, with 126 film, like what I J had there in the 1970s. Even when starting with even worsened “originals” like the example below – photo of photo album page.
⚠️ BUT, be VERY careful with especially peoples’ faces – results can often completely distorted, and not close to look-a-likes, showing completely different people, not anyone you’ve ever met or known….
Recommendations, one or multiple in combination:
- Do not enlarge too much, keep faces a bit indistinct
- When sharing media, do provide both original and AI-manipulated, “enhanced”,

In pictures below, “we” all know and can recognize people in the original (1st) picture) but WHO ARE the people in the second AI-“enhanced”?!?

Note: all thes “works” was done fairly quickly using ChatGPT in Nov 2026 and better tools and with more time and efforts, results can probably be way better, also for faces.

Negativ

Många av mina egna (Js) finns dels i album, dels vissa kvar i sina original-kuvert och i kartonger, men det kan också finnas en del av också mina bland de pappa har förvaltat. Var exakt dessa är TBD.

När hittat – och får tid – skall de bli lite intressant att undersöka kvalitet man kan få om jobbar med dessa riktiga original!
