2020 (Dec 2020) Finally getting rid of ALL  remaining CDs – data and music, as well as data DVDs. Will soon enough not have ANY computer able to play CDs or DVDs.  (At this time only have left a IM27 ’10 and IM27 ’11 that has CD/DVD drive.) Destroyed 317 disks (!) in December 2020 after ensuring having copies on hard disks of relevant materials (docs, media).
(Movie DVDs is a different matter, as do continue to keep players for such – SE/PAL and US/NTSC zones.)
2020

Video-Focus

A bit more on transcoding history.

Era Original Material – Film/Video   Transcoding / Conversion Phases
1960s
1970s

8 mm Film
* 8mm Film (C-J) 1960s into early 1970s.
* No more film during 70s, as far as know
(#1) 1980s sometime: transfered to VHS, by  external service. VHS cassettes to every family member.
(#2) 2006-01: digitized by J, HP media PC, to .mpg files, MPEG-2. (10.34 GB, all files)
(#2b) Also created DVDs (DVD# 602051) for every family member. Note: transcoding settings for fitting media onto one DVD compressed material to around 4.61 GB.
(#3) 2020-12-01: transcoded from MPEG-2 files (#2) to MPEG-4/AVC/H.264, by J. Tests, to try out suitable settings.
MPEG-2 – files: 10.34 GB
MPEG-4 – files: 3.21 GB (69% smaller!)
TO-DOs:
– change background music to own, better (easy, as long as can find suitable music), and aside technical setup to parse through all small files and replace sound tracks……
– try cleaning up video material, scratches, colors, … (advanced)
– transcode to H.265.
1980s

VHS Video
* VHS (w): Got a few moose-hunting films shot by Kjell Hultfeldt, ’88, ’89, ’92.
(No own materials shot in 1980s, was a poor student then, no access to any film/video cam.)
(#1) 2006-01: digitized by J, HP media PC, to .mpg files, MPEG-2. (13 GB, all files)
(#2) 2020-12-01: transcoded from MPEG-2 files (#1) to MPEG-4/AVC/H.264, by J. Tests, to try out suitable settings.
MPEG-2 – files: 13.1 GB
MPEG-4 – files: 6.7 GB (49% smaller!)
(Note: not sure selected transcoding settings are optimal…)
TO-DOs:
– clean up sound! try increase sound of speech!
– more ideas at Älgjakt Sep 1989
1990s

Video8 (8 mm Video)
* Video8/jp (J; ’93-’99)
(#1) 2006-02: digitized by J, HP media PC, to .mpg files, MPEG-2. (23.9 GB, all files)
(#2) 2020-12-28-29: transcoded from MPEG-2 files (#1) to MPEG-4/AVC/H.264, by J. Tests, to try out suitable settings.
MPEG-2 – files: 23.9 GB
MPEG-4 – files: 18.8 GB (21% smaller)
(Note: not sure selected transcoding settings are optimal…)
TO-DOs:
– certainly not sure transcoding settings are optimal…
2000s Canon Digital Cameras
*
(No video shot earlier part of 2000s…?! Can’t find any.)
* Canon SD450 dig. cam., 1st video 2005-12-10, MVI_0036.AVI
* Canon SD780 dig. cam., 1st video 2009-12-24, 200912241722-0006.MOV
TO-DOs:
– transcode old original recordings in what-ever encoding(s) used (got at least one motion-JPEG (!) from SD450) to H.264 or H.265.
2010s
2020s
iPhones
* iPhone 3GS 2009-06-19 sh (20090619_0006.MOV 1st video?)

* iPhones 12 Pro 2020-10-24 (1st media)
TO-DOs: none (yet) planned at this time.
